What to Note in the Overall Design of a Laboratory Ventilation System

Created on 10.11
For the overall design of a laboratory ventilation system, two mutually restrictive factors—effective air exhaust and noise impact—should first be considered (generally, the faster the air velocity in the pipeline, the greater the noise). At the same time, attention should also be paid to the functional requirements of the laboratory and the aesthetics of the indoor layout.
There are two common installation locations for fans: indoors and on the roof. In general, installing fans on the roof not only saves the effective space of the laboratory and avoids direct noise interference from the fans, but also enables the effective discharge of harmful gases and facilitates installation. Therefore, fans should be installed on the roof first. When the exhaust volume of a single fan exceeds 2,000 cubic meters per hour, the indoor noise will be very loud. On the premise of ensuring effective air change volume, the method of operating multiple small fans can be adopted to reduce noise. Small fans themselves produce less vibration, and the asynchrony of multiple fans during operation can also offset part of the vibration noise. Increasing the length of the ventilation pipeline and the number of bends can also reduce part of the noise, but this requires increasing the fan power.
The floor where the laboratory is located often determines the length of the ventilation pipeline, which is also one of the important factors affecting the exhaust volume and noise.
From the above analysis, it can be concluded that:
  • The analytical laboratory is located on the top floor of the laboratory building. The ventilation pipeline is relatively short, so the noise issue is particularly critical
  • The anatomy laboratory is located on the first floor of the laboratory building. The ventilation pipeline is as long as more than 20 meters, which can effectively suppress part of the noise but will also cause a certain loss of exhaust volume. Using two 3,000W fans can meet the above requirements.
